Mira Murati’s story is seriously inspiring --- she proves you do not need a perfect plan to do something amazing.
She grew up in Albania and left home at just 16 (on scholarship) to study in Canada. From there, she went to the U.S. and studied mechanical engineering.
After college, she didn’t follow one straight path. She worked in aerospace, then moved to Tesla to help build the Model X, and later joined a virtual reality company.
None of those jobs were directly connected, but each one helped her learn new skills and grow as an engineer.

In 2018, Mira joined OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
Back then, AI wasn’t as huge as it is now, but she saw its potential and wanted to continue building it. She worked her way up to become Chief Technology Officer, leading the team that built ChatGPT and DALL·E — two tools that completely changed how people use technology.
But even after reaching the top, she didn’t stop there. In 2025, Mira left OpenAI to start her own company, Thinking Machines Lab, where she’s focused on making AI safer and more human-centered. She took another big leap, showing that growth never really ends.
Why Mira's Story Matters To You 🫵
Mira Murati’s journey shows that you don’t have to stick to one path to find success.
She went from aerospace → electric cars → artificial intelligence, proving that every experience, even the ones that seem random, can help you build your future.
Her story reminds us that it’s okay not to have everything figured out right now. What matters most is staying curious, taking risks, and trusting yourself enough to explore new things.
You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going — you just have to start.
